Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

question about legal advice for a bank that allowed critical information to be r

A bank in South Dakota had a audit done, the auditors downloaded information on to their laptops. The info was un-encrypted and contained private information for school loans, Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers. The laptops for the auditors was stolen along with the information that they downloaded. My question is this, my professor for Network Administration said that I should consult a attorney about the situation since the bank and auditors were neglagant and allowed personal information out that could be very damaging to me. I am not sure really where to begin, but wanted to ask and find out any info. I would like to know what responsibility the bank should assume since their neglagence led to this info getting stolen.

If the bank's negligence has caused you damages, you may have an action against the bank under both contract and tort legal theories.

There may also be statutory (state and federal) issues presented.

Did this happen to your account information?

Has the bank proposed any payment or other settlement to you?

There also may be a class action potential for all account holders similarly affected.
