Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota
Small Claims
My old roommate hasn't paid me for the back rent and deposit on our house that we were renting. She wrote two bad checks to the landlord and hasn't attempted to pay for the late fees and the back rent. Also she owes me money for utilities. I have attempted to get this resolved without taking her to court. But she has given me no choice.
I would please like to know how to go about taking her to small claims court. And getting the money that she owes the landlord and myself.

Re: Small Claims
You could sue in small claims court and the procedure is relatively easy. Contact your county courthouse for information on how to do so. You will have to pay a filing fee which can be added to the amount you are suing for. You will then be required to fill out a complaint stating your grounds for your relief and your damages. The county then serves this on the defendant and a court date is made. At court you give your side of the story and present evidence and the defendant then tells her side of the story. If you win you get a judgment in your favor. Then comes the hard part - collecting the judgment.
Often a letter or a phone call from an attorney will get the defendant to pay up short of going to court. Good luck.
