Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Minnesota

Stopped check payment of $2000

In the last few months of our relationship, my boyfriend borrowed over $2000 which he promised to pay back. When I discovered he was fooling around, I broke off the relationship. He wrote me a check for $2000 which I deposited. A few days later, the bank called to tell me the ex had stopped payment on the check. I called him and he said that he ''didn't have the money''. What steps in Minneapolis must I take to recover my monies? I live in St Louis MO as did he when the monies were borrowed.

You would be best advised to file suit in small claims court (conciliation court) in Minnesota to seek a Judgement against him. You may then pursue creditor's remedies related to garnishment. The Judgement would also become a lien against any real property located in the county where the Judgement is filed.
