wifes debt falling on to spouse

my wife owes multible debts and is in arrears to the point of collectors threating me of title searces on my home. I have owned my home for about 12 years and only married for 6 years. is there away they can put judgements against me as a spouse when i have not co signed anything for her. I sound like i dont care but my checks make the payments and i dont have enough to try and pay her bills also. thanks

You wife's debts are hers not yours. ALso, Homestead is exempt ( up to $ 300K).

3rd party debt collectors may be in violation of Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, entitling you to damages. Call or email for further assistance.

Generally speaking a spouse in Minnesota is not liable on his or her spouse's contract debts, except those for "necessities", such as food, shelter, etc.

Your wife should consult a bankruptcy attorney and perhaps one of the legitimate debt counseling services, such as the Village or Family Means or Lutheran SOcial Services.

You should also consult an attorney to review what debts are making claims against her and how that may affect you.
