Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
Is it best to get an attorney or represent myself? I had a fight with my wife and she called 911, she said things that were not true and then she hung up and the police came, she said I hing up the phone and I didn't and then I left so I wouldn't have to go to jail, they took a statement and said I interfered with the 911 call and never did and have a witness to that, she had been drinking and she gets abit crazy.
I went to court without a lawyer and would not plead guilty to something I didn't do, they wanted me to go to jail for 15 days and probation for a yr. and 200 fine, I said no.
So now they said I can go to a jury or face the judge alone and I still do not have an attorney, I can't afford one and make to much for an appointed one..whats my best option, my wife will testify she made it out worse then it was and she herself hung up the phone and a witness was there to that night.

This is very serious. Borrow money if you have to, so you can hire a lawyer.
"The person who represents themself has a fool for a client." Lawyers use other lawyers a lot - for a reason.
Domestic assault creates a serious criminal record with lifelong ramifications. Prosecutors are quite aggressive in these cases. You will need a good lawyer if you want to avoid being labeled for life.
