Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

bad checks

My mother-in-law lives in Minnesota, and went gambling at a casino in Wisconson. While there she wrote some checks for cash. She had set up a ppayment plan with a major department store, and they were to take a small amount out of her bank account. They took alot more than they were supposed to and due to that her checks bounced. The casino is telling her that it is a federal charge for bouncing the checks and won't accept any type of payment plan, except the full amount immediatly. She is elderly and in poor health, and is worried that she will go to prison like they are telling her she will.

Is it a Federal crime? and what is her best course of action?

Re: bad checks

It can be a federal offense since casinos and tribal rights to run them are governed by Federal law. However, depending on the amounts, it is unlikely to be a charged out by a U.S. attorney. It is more likely to be charged in State Court.
