Unfortunately, criminal defense attorneys generally require the payment of fees up front to secure services. the fee depends on the nature of the charge. Without funds to hire a lawyer, the only option is a public defender.

In my experience few people facing a criminal charge had any idea they would be in that situation, or have funds available to pay for a private criminal defense lawyer. Private (as opposed to public defenders) criminal defense lawyers generally require payment in advance. The only way a client can retain me as their lawyer and still make payments towards their attorney fee, is to make payment with a credit card, or borrow the money from a bank or friend or family member; then make payments to them (not me). Many other criminal defense lawyers these days will accept credit cards as a form of payment. If he owns a car or a house, he may want to sell those or get a loan against those, in order to protect his liberty, his reputation, and his ability to continue to earn a living. Good luck.
