Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
Deceptive Trade Practices - Attorney General
I was recently forced to resign from my position with a non-profit. The Attorney General is charging Deceptive Trade practices. I hid and covered to protect the identity of a donor only I think I was scammed, only I can't prove it because of my covering for this person.
Anyways, I will be needing an attorney and I need to know how to find an attorney that has taken on and won against the Attorney General. I have always just wanted to help people and I can't believe I have to go through this. Please tell me how to find a strong attorney with Attorney General experience. This has cost me the job I love. I was an hourly employee. I got paid for 40 hours & worked on avg. 55 never paid for those hours, did it because I liked helping people. I was told I had full board support even told the board what I had did & they still supported me until the AG got ahold of them - I need help - please.

Re: Deceptive Trade Practices - Attorney General
I am a bit confused by your question. Have you been charged with a crime, or have you lost your job because of your conduct at work?
Whether or not you have been charged with a crime, you should not respond to any questions or demands for information from the Attorney General's office, or from any other person or agency, without consulting an attorney. If you have not yet been charged with a crime, the information you provide may be used against you and could be used to develop a criminal case against you.
Even if you have not been charged with a crime, and have no concern about that, you still should not respond to any questions or requests for information without consulting an attorney. It is possible you may have civil liability to an individual or to the non-profit for damages. Without knowing more about the issue, I cannot comment more completely. Nevertheless, the same rule applies whether you are facing possible civil or criminal proceedings: don't speak with anyone about the matter without consulting an attorney.
Finally, it is possible that you may have an employment claim, although that is mere speculation based on the limited facts in your question. However, I do NOT ENCOURAGE YOU TO DISCLOSE ANY MORE DETAILED FACTS AT THIS OR ANY OTHER PUBLIC WEBSITE. Any question you post on this or other sites is not protected by any attorney client privilege. Specific discussions should only occur in an attorney's office or over the phone.
