Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

embezzeling

As of Friday I was fired from my job of many years at a bank. They found out that I had been changing a customers deposits and taking the money. The total amount is somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000. I have never been in any trouble with the law. I only took the money to feed my children (which is a bad excuse). I fully intend to repay the money. I don't think the customer is going to press charges but what are my consequences if he does or if he doesn't. I would really like a quick reply as this is eating me up and I am feeling as if my whole life has been ruined. Please help me. I have never done anything this stupid before in my life.

Re: embezzeling

Since the amounts taken were in excess of $500, you are likely to be charged with a felony. Fortunately, in most cases, a felony can be avoided and often, a criminal record can be avoided by agreeing to a probationary period where teh restitution would be paid.

If charged, it would likely be a felony theft charge of some sort. For a first time property offense charge with this amount of loss, it would be reasonable to try to keep the defendant's record free of a conviction after probation. There are various ways to accomplish this.
