Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

False Info relayed to Police.....

Police were dispatched to my home for a property damage report that I had made, due to ex boyfriend & I having a comfrontation. When they arrived, I told them of the damage that happened, and they noticed marks on my arm. Due to me hitting my arm, but I told them because of him grabbing me. Well now hes being charged with felony domestic, and damage to property. My question is, how do I go about telling what really happen? I didn't know that those charges were goin to be filed against him. In the report it states that police were dispatched for damage to property, NOT a domestic? Does he have a chance of getting the domestic dropped and what consequences will I have to expect for making false statements against him??? Might I add, I was in a rage for the damage he did cause, that was my reasoning for lying in the 1st place. Thank you

You could contact his defense lawyer, and offer to give a statement about it. That would likely help him.

As for fears of being charged with giving a false statement, I see that threat made often by prosecutors, but have yet to see a prosecutor actually victimize the "victim" in that way. I think when prosecutors make that threat, they are close to suborning perjury -- both unethical and a crime in itself.

You could have your own lawyer in the case too, if you wanted.
