Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

Felony gun posession

My friend recently was pulled over for a traffic stop and has no license. His car was searched and in the trunk the police found a hand gun inside a case in a box. This gun was not my friends but he had it in a box given to him from his recently deceased uncle. He had a prior felony many years ago and has NO violent crimes on his record. He is being charged with felony posession of firearm. What can be done?

Re: Felony gun posession

His lawyer should investigate and research whether the stop was illegal, whether the search was illegal, whether any admissions or confessions were obtained illegally, whether he is really prohibited from firearm possession based upon a prior "felony" conviction, and whether any of the exceptions to the permit requirement exist, for carrying an unloaded, cased pistol in the trunk of a car -- among other things.
