Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

Juvenile charges

Hello,

My son and a friend were just caught breaking into a salvage yard and taking a door. They removed the door off the car and carried it about 50 ft. before he had a change of mind and set it down. One the walk back to their car (empty handed)they noticed lights flashing around. They ran through some trees close to but not on the property. After they got back out to the road they approached the cops and told them that those were thier cars back there and were looking for a place to play paintball. The cops ran the i.d.'s and let them go. Acouple days later the police returned to our house saying that they would be charged with trespassing and attempted burgurly. I dont know anything about the law. Anything that you could do to help us would be greatly appreciated. What should we do, and what kind of consequences could they face, charges ect.

Re: Juvenile charges

Talk to a criminal defense lawyer, right away. They should not talk to the police. In Minnesota, juveniles have the right to have their lawyer AND their parent present while police try to talk to them. They should not talk to police -- at all -- without their parent and lawyer being present.

Re: Juvenile charges

The charge is very serious and could be a felony which carries with it serious consequences including a loss of some ciil rights. First, do not make any statements to the polie. Second contact a lawyer to determine what defenses meay exist.
