Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
A lady watched my wife hide her purse in the car before going into the gym, and she broke in to steal it minutes after my wife walked away. She charged about $3000 in about an hour or so before we could get her cards cancelled. The woman is part of a large theft ring and the police have identified her and are re-opening my wife's case. They are going to try her in the county next to us by combining about 12 cases together instead of 12 smaller, individual cases. My wife has not been able to go to the gym since this happened and has been emotionally affected. Also, the purse was a $500 anniversary present from me, so I'm very upset that it was stolen and the police have said there is almost an non-existent chance we'll see it again. What charges can we press? The credit card company's cleared the amounts, she charged, but can we seek compensation for the purse and emotional distress she has caused my wife? Thank you for your help!

Unfortunately, there is little remedy for your situation. Only a prosecutor can press criminal charges. You could always sue for civil damages, but the likelihood of collection is minimal.
