Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

Do I need a lawyer????!!

Hi, I recently got caught shoplifting from Kohls. I had about $60 worth in Merch. I have already paid the civil restitution. My mom called a lawyer and they said it was necessary for me hire, but they said I'd have to plea Not guilty. Which won't work because the officer question me in the LP room & basically got my confession. I am 19 and I plan on getting a good job in a few years and I'm worried about this being on my record. I have a clean record thus far and I just need to know if there is a way to get this off and if it is necessary to have a lawyer to do it.

Thank you for the post.

A theft of less than $500 is charged as a misdemeanor which is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $1000 fine. Many prosecutors have become very tough on such cases given the pressures placed on them by highly taxed businesses in their jurisdiction. As a result, an aggressive defense is necessary.

Often challenges can be made to the charges based on procedures used. In most cases, if you have representation and no prior criminal record, a conviction may be avoided.
