Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
misdemeanor retail theft of 25.00
can i still work as a paralegal in a non-profit domestic abuse shelter, or family law attorney?
I plead guilty with an explanation.
Have a fine, and some community service; but it still goes on my record. :( The circumstances were, me being too lazy to get a cart or so i put some small items in my purse, with no intention of not paying..however having my kids with me, and all the ''can i get this?''
going on, and other distractions i forot to get the small items out of my purse, and while leaving the store the security guard stopped me. I refused to sign the paper that states I did not feel he was acting in a threating manner. While he interviewed me 1/2 way thru he took out his handcuffs, and laid them on the desk, he repeatedly shuffled them around on his desk. He would type something on the report, then turn around and shuffle the handcuffs around again. I don't know maybe he suffers from ADD; he was terribly shaky, and a bit jittery. Then he called the Police
they took down my info from my drivers liscense, and I was let go out the back door.

If you plead "guilty," no explanation matters (except perhaps to get a reduced fine, etc.). Pleading "guilty" leads to a permanent criminal record which can be expected to show up on criminal background checks.
Whether the "crime of dishonesty" conviction prevents you from various jobs, occupations and professional licenses may vary. I doubt you could become a lawyer with such a conviction. The others may be difficult as well.
It's too bad you didn't retain a good criminal defense lawyer. I'm typically able to help keep my clients record clean in these situations.
