Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
misdemeanor theft
Good day. I was caught with shoplifting and charged with a misdemeanor theft in Minnesota. I am very scared and concerned of what is going to happen to me. This is my first offense and I have a clean past history. I also have served 4 years in the military and currently still in the reserves. I am also a good student too as well. What I am trying to imply is that this is not my character and was an honest, stupid mistake that i will regret for the rest of my life. I can't afford a lawyer and in desperate need of guidance. What can I face and what should I do? I am really scared of what is going to happen to me, please advise. Thanks.

Re: misdemeanor theft
Thank you for the post. A mosdemeanor thefyt is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $1000 fine. If you have a clean record, and depending on how the theft occurred, there are many potential ways to preserve your record.
Though the crime is a misdemeanor, the collateral consequences of a conviction can be severe. Often, a theft charge will resuult in employment denials particularly if the position is one that involves handling money.
We can help. With over 18 years of experience, we can file the necessary motions and present a strong defense that may well result in a Stay of any prosecution thus avoiding a conviction.
