Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
Prior convictions
If you had been previously convicted of a felony but later it was reduced to a gross misdemeanor how would a person answer that question on a job application?

Re: Prior convictions
The answer will depend on the question in the job application. Some applications are now very specific, and will ask whether the applicant was ever convicted of a felony, whether or not the conviction was later reduced to a lesser offense. Moreover, I would want to ensure the conviction was, in fact, reduced. Finally, some employers will take the position that, even if a conviction is later reduced, it is still true that, at some time in the past, the applicant pleaded guilty to a felony. You must verify the status of the conviction and, most important, carefully review the question on each application.
