Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
Public Urination
A few weeks ago I received a urinating in public violation in a parking lot (Garage B, downtown Mlps). I am wondering how much this will cost me? Also, is it wise for me to show up without an attorney for such a small case (misdemeanor)?? Any comments will be beneficial. Thank you.

Re: Public Urination
Most of my clients facing charges like this are primarily concerned about having a public record of a, too them, embarrassing conviction (which could come up in background checks). Therefore, the defense goal has usually been to avoid any conviction and avoid any guilty plea. If the case could be resolved as a "Continuance For Dismissal" (or "Continuance Without a Plea") that would meet this criteria.
You might be able to get that result at the First Appearance without a lawyer by talking to the prosecutor. The danger there is the prosecutor potentially convincing you that she won't offer that, and that you should plead guilty to something and get it over with, because you can't win, etc. If they won't offer the above outcome, you'd best politely decline, set it for a pretrial date, and go retain a good criminal defense lawyer (like me).
You could retain a lawyer right away. That would be safer, and would not cost any more.
