Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota

Regaining all personal possesions

Recently I was arrested and a Order For Protection was issued against me. My conditions of release stated that I could not have contact with my now ex-girlfriend who still lives at the apartment we shared. All of my possessions (most of which I have had since long before my ex and I met so I no longer have reciepts for a lot of my stuff. What steps do I need to take to try to regain my belongings if she tries to claim all of my stuff as hers?

Re: Regaining all personal possesions

The first thing most people in this situation do is to call the local police in the area where the belongings are located, explain the situation, and ask for an escort for a time when you can retrieve your belongings. Police will refuse to mediate disputes about ownership, and won't be willing to spend excessive time, normally.

If there is a dispute about property she will not return, you can commence a civil suit in court to recover, the property or its value. Contact a civil lawyer (I am a criminal lawyer) for more on how to get help doing that.
