Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
Please Help Me I am Scared
I was in an auto accident last night. There was no away around it however, I was charged with careless driving. There was either one or two cars that had me trapped, one driver had threatened me a week ago. The police officer said I was a male on my ticket, yet I am female. He said I refused to go to the hospital, yet my mother drove me. I turned 18 in June, and this is the first traffic violation I have ever received since I've had my license. I don't know what to do, I reacted by speeding because nothing else worked, and I crashed my car. Please help me, I feel that I have some how been cornered, and that there is no way out. I feel that the other vehicle(s) had this planned because of the threat that was made last week. A reply would be appreciate before Dec. 4th, 2002. I have my court appearance at 9 a.m. I would like to know if I should plead guilty, or not guilty and try to pursue this and see if the truth will come out. Please help, I don't know what to do.

Re: Please Help Me I am Scared
While your story here is somewhat confusing, it appears that you've been charged with the misdemeanor traffic crime of Careless Driving. I recommend that you consult with a lawyer at your earliest convenience. Many criminal defense lawyers, like me, will meet with you for an initial one-hour consultation for free. In terms of pleading guilty at the first appearance, that is rarely a good idea. You would be well advised to have a lawyer help you fight this. At the very least, consult with a lawyer about the various issues of which you should be mindful.
