Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
My son is a freshman in college. The policy issued him a MIP ticket and they found wrapping papers and a tin foil pipe but no marijuana. The police officer told my son that if he wore a wire and bought marijuana from someone that they would not write up the drug charge. Does this sound legitimate? My son is worried about his protection. If he decides not to do the sting operation and takes the ticket will he lose his federal financial aid and have to pay it back?

In situations like this your son needs someone to protect his rights and ensure that the officers are not simply lying to him. Something they are allowed to do. I would strongly advise him to meet with a criminal defense attorney and have one present when he meets with any law enforcement.

Police generally give the "work with us" pitch, even on petty cases. In the past I've usually been able to keep my client's records clean, where no priors and a small charge. If it's important, don't talk to police, get a lawyer. Police are hard on snitches.
