Legal Question in Criminal Law in Minnesota
I worked as a bartender until last Friday. Two plain clothes officers came in to do an alcohol sting. Shortly after, two young men came into the bar and ordered drinks. I checked both ID's and told one of them he was too young. Unfortunately, I misread the other ID and thought it said that he was 21. I served him a beer. I now have to go to court on MN state statute 340A.503 (2). I intend on hiring a lawyer. I see the crime is listed as a gross misdemeanor with a penalty of up to $3000 and 1 year in jail. As a first time offender, is it likely that I will be able to plea it down to a lesser crime, get probation/fine rather than jail time, plea no contest for a lighter sentence...etc? Thank you for your time.

Depending on the prosecutor's demeanor, and if you hire a lawyer, it is likely that you will be able to get some kind of a Stayed sentence which could result in this not being on your permanent record.
