You could be charged with, and be convicted for, one or more crimes. You could be sued civilly for money damages. Your credit and reputation in the community could be severely damaged.

You implicitly are supposed to know whether your account is open or whether it has sufficient funds to cover a check. If the check remains unpaid after a demand, you may be charged with theft by check. Depending on the amount of the check it could be anything from a misdemeanor to a felony.
