Legal Question in DUI Law in Minnesota

3 minor consumptions in MN

I recently got my 3rd (I know, THIRD!) Minor within 2 months, and I am wondering if it would be in my best interest to hire an attorney. All three were given in MN. I Didn't go to court for my second one because when I took off work to go to my first one, the woman filing people in at the courtroom said it wasn't necessary to appear in court for minor consumptions, and that all I needed to do was pay the fine. So when I got my second one, I thought, why take off work to go when she said all I need to do was pay my fines? Well, I didnt go, and it turns out that is just for the FIRST one. My most recent minor was at my friends house, and when the cops came, we both were in bed sleeping, and she eventually answered the door after them knocking on the door for about 20 minutes, and they said they only wanted to talk to us, and no minors would be given out, well, one cop ended up giving us both Minors after we have been sleeping for awhile. I am 20 years old, and will be turning 21 in the middle of November. I am trying to get any information that will benefit me/prevent me from going to jail or losing my license, since I am a student and work. Anything you could help me with would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

If it matters to you, retain a good defense lawyer.

For next time:

1. Don't answer the door. If they have a warrant they'll come in anyway. If not, they probably won't be able to.

2. Don't admit drinking. Don't lie either. Just say nothing.

3. Don't blow into a "portable breath test" machine. You are not required to do so, especially when not in a motor vehicle.

4. Don't get close enough to them for them to smell odor. Don't make eye contact for them to see eyes. Etc.

If you even consider the idea of doing this without a lawyer, think of how well you have done so far representing yourself. Until you get some professional advice, you are likely to continue digging yourself in deeper.

Will Rogers said, when you find yourself in a hole, quit digging.
