No, the plate impoundment applies to ALL vehicles with his name on the title, even if those vehicles weren't used for the DWI. It is his responsibility to take the plates off his other vehicles and turn them in to the DMV. Once the impoundment is processed by the DMV, all of his vehicles will have flags on them. If he does not turn in his plates and someone drives his vehicle, they will be committing a misdemeanor. If other people need to drive those vehicles, or if he wants to drive his vehicles after getting a work permit or his full license back, he will need to apply for special plates (known as "whiskey plates") for those vehicles. If he gets a new vehicle within the next year, that vehicle also will be subject to the impoundment. You can also get "whiskey plates" for your vehicle so you can still drive it around. The impoundment lasts for one full year.
