The question is what could possibly happen to someone who has permanent resident status in the U.S. and is now facing charges of DWI for the second time.

It is possible to be placed in removal/deportation proceedings for a crime of moral turpitude. On a misdemeanor offense, it is unlikely. On a second offense where the penalty may be more than a year, deportation is possible but not likely.
It is far more likely that the ticket delays any ability to seek naturalization for a five year period.
