Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

Back child support

I owe back child support from the late 70's. The state keeps my Tax refunds from state and federal.

I have a court order for garnishment from my check every two weeks for $17.91

My daughter is now 31 years old. The question is this, If I buy a boat or Motorcycle, can Anoka county Social Services come and take anything away from me, sell it and put it towards my bill. Or by haveing my check garnishment. Does that cover all the requerments by myself.

Thank You

Re: Back child support

Assuming the state or your X has a valid and current judgment against you, they could seize a motorcycle - unless that's your only vehicle and you could claim it as exempt.

There are things that can be done in some cases in the bankruptcy court with old stuff like this. Consult a bankruptcy attorney.

This is for general information purposes only and does not create an attorney client-relationship.

Good luck.

Re: Back child support

The County may only pursue collection through regular collection channels. That means your assets are safe. They may garnish bank accounts, tax returns, and seek garnishments.
