Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

change of child custody hearing

I am the father of a 14 year old daughter who has been living with me since May 19, 2008. I recently submitted forms to change custody from joint to sole custody. The hearing is tommorrow. I just received the response from her today. My question is: I am representing myself, and do not communicate well, can I have my cousin speak for me at this hearing? She is not an attorney, nor does she have any legal training. If she can, how do I ask the court for their permission?

Re: change of child custody hearing

I am afraid not. If your cousin is not a lawyer, he/she would not be able to represent you or your interests in court. A change of custody is a significant request and the standard for such a change is very high. You must be able to argue your case within the confines of the existing law. It would be very difficult to do so without counsel.
