Re: Child rights

Unfortunately, you would still be responsible for the negligent acts of your monor child. Accordingly, it is not usually a wise move.

Re: Child rights

There comes a time when many parents have asked, or will ask, this question: under what circumstances can I throw my child out of my home, or make him/her pay rent, give up the car, etc.

There is no reason you cannot ask a seventeen year old child to leave your house, but no matter how difficult the relationship, you will continue to have legal responsibility for the child, and for his/her actions.

Occasionally, a child leaves, with or without the consent of the parent. At seventeen years of age, there may be nothing a parent can do to prevent this. In those circumstances, your liability for the acts of the child, and your responsibility for the child's care, are often treated differently by the law.

If you have a choice, I would discourage you from moving a child out of your home. It is wiser to find a third person who can help you mediate with the child, rather than summarily excluding the child from your home.

Thank you for your question. Feel free to contact my office if you have additional questions or concerns.
