Re: child support

Under current MN law, child support is determined by the use of guidelines that are tied to the noncustodial parent's net income. Prior support orders are deducted when net income is calculated for purposes of a later order. Consequently, the first in time to get a support order generally will receive a larger share of the support than those who get their orders later in time. This will change, however, under the new statute that goes into effect on January 1, 2007.
