Your son can file a Motion for Modification of Child Support. That procedure entails examining his income, expenses, etc. at the time of the initial order versus what they are now. It also takes into consideration the financial position of the ex-spouse at the time of the initial order and now. If your son's income has been drastically reduced since the initial order, he would have a good chance at getting the child support reduced.

Nothing happens automatically including a reduction in child support. Your son must file a Motion to modify his child support and he must do so as soon as possible since there can be no retroactive modification. Any Modification would only date back to th day that he files his motion. It sounds as if he has a very good basis for a modification.
