Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

Child Support

My support order reads - payments will continue until the age of 18 or age 20 if still in secondary school

What is secondary school ? And what does this phrase mean.

Re: Child Support

Secondary school is high school. Your support obligation will continue until the child graduates from high school, unless the child has not yet turned 18 at the time of graduation, in which case support will continue until he or she is 18. If the child reaches the age of 18 while still in high school, then support continues until he or she graduates, or is no longer a full time student, and in no event will support continue beyond the age of 20 (unless the child is disabled and therefore not capable of self support).

Re: Child Support

Secondary is high school.

In Washington, the order would read something like, "support shall be paid until the child turns eighteen or graduates from high school, whichever comes last".

The idea is to provide support even if a high schooler turns eighteen but hasn't yet graduated high school.

I am not licensed in MI so it might be different there.

Hope this helps. Powell
