Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

Childsupport Collectors

From 1992 to May 2000 I received no child support. I worked and was on the welfare system. My exboyfriend paid all child support due in May 2000. The county took it all and said I have no right to any of it even when I worked and received no assistance. Is this true? They can do that?

Re: Childsupport Collectors

Usually the courts will require a non-custodial parent to pay child support and/or medicial, etc. if the custodial parent is receiving any type of public assistance. It is unclear though by your question whether or not the county has just recently taken the money from you or if this occurred when your ex paid the balance in 2000. That may be an important factor in the analysis.
