Custody is based upon the 13 best interest factors. If you go to my website, I have a link to the Minnesota Statutes. Look at 518.17. My website also has links to other resources that might help you educate yourself before you enter the courtroom. Prior to most hearings, you will have an opportunity to negotiate with the other party. You can also discuss with the other party the possiblity of going through mediation. If you cannot afford an attorney for any subsequent hearings, you may want to contact the legal aid office in your area to see if you qualify for a free attorney although there might be a long waiting list. Here is my website: www.HeidiSwisherLaw.com.
