i would like custody of my child i feel the mother can not afford him even with my help and she is not with him much.

Child custody is determined based on the totality of the circumstances. Financial ability may play a role but not a significant one. Ultimately, it is determined based on what is in the child's best interets, which is impossible to determine on limited facts.
