Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota
custody
If you are being represented by legal aide, and they don't seem to have done things in the best of your interest, can you challenge their work with a private lawyer? Otherwise, if they did poor work can you have the case reopened on that basis and what do you need to prove they did poor work? What if they failed to inform you of certain things?

Re: custody
If you are dissatisfied with the work done by a legal aid attorney, you should discuss the matter with a supervisor or another attorney in the office. Sometimes your lawyer must make difficult decisions in your case, and in some instances there is little a lawyer (any lawyer) can do to obtain a certain result.
In general, the court will not reopen a case if one of the parties complains about the quality of the representation they have received. If your case is not concluded (in other words, if a final judgment has not been entered), a new lawyer may be able to breath new life into the file although you will have to pay for the service.
Good luck.
