Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

My ex-husband, father of my 9 year old, and I divorced during my pregnancy. Since our son was 4 years old, he has had no comtact with us per his choice. He does live in the same small town. He pays child support, but has not called, written, etc. until yesterday. He wrote to me wanting to start seeing my son, which I do not feel is mentally healthy for my son. How can I go about keeping my son's father out of his life, as he has done himself for the past 5 years?
