Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

My huband's ex owes us over $24,000 in back child support. She now pays $290/month. We really need money now, she offered to pay $6,000 now if we dropped the past payments. Is that a good deal?

First of all, there must be some questions answered. If the child support recipient receives any form of public assistance (food stamps, daycare assistance, rental assistance, medical assistance) no agreement can be reached on arrears unless the State also agrees.

Second, whether a deal to satisfy arrears is a "good" deal depends on many things. Is ongoing child support still owed? Is there any conditional agreement that ongoing support must be paid in a timely manner? Does the obligor have resources to pay more? Does the obligor have a need to satisfy the debt because of actions for contempt or license cancellation?
