Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

minor dating an adult

I am wanting to have a relationship with someone that is nine years older then me. I am seventeen and in seven months I will be eighteen, but I really want to know if him and I can date right now. I am sick of waiting because of my age and just want to know if it is okay (legal) for him and I to date now.

Re: minor dating an adult

First, you should analyze whether the relationship is appropriate for you.

Second, "dating" is never a crime.

Third, under Minnesota law, so long as the adult is not using coercion or undue influence based on a position of authority, there is no offense.

Fourth, your parents still have the right to determine who you see. If they do not agree withthe decision, they can preclude the contact by restraining order if necessary
