Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

Our rights as grandparents

My daughter had a child out of wed-lock and has been homeless for the last 6 to 8 months. My husband and I want to step in and take the baby to provide the stablity and security she needs, not to mention her regular health check ups etc. The child has only had her 3 and 6 months shots & wellness check ups. The baby has been been bounced from mother to other relatives for most of her life and she will soon be 14 months old. Her mother has never had her for more that a week or 2 at a time. This is very unhealthy for our granddaughter and we want to put a stop to it. What are our rights as grandparents and how do we go about getting custody either teporary or permanent? We want to step in before Social services do so we don't loose our rights to her.

Re: Our rights as grandparents

I am afraid your best chance would be to work through social services. If your grandchild has not lived with you for an extended period the third party custody laws would be very difficult to use to seek custody. They are very narrowly tailored.
