Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

room and board costs

My ex husband and I are involved in a post decree dispute about college expenses each of us incurred when our oldest was attending the university. I want to know how much money I should be able to claim for my college age son when he lived with me during college.

Re: room and board costs

I am not sure whatyour question may be. Under Minnesota law, child support terminates at the age of 18 and graduiation from high school.

There is no obligation to pay college expenses by statute and the court cannot inmpose that obligation unless it is agreed upon by the parties. In such a situation, the language in the order would control.

Generally, an agreement to contribute to college expenses would not include paying the other parent for providing room and board.
