The answer is "maybe." Either party may be awarded the family residence. However, the ex spouse would have to be compensated for their one half of any marital equity accrued in the property. This can be done by awarding that spouse other assets of equal value, offsetting the award of property with debt, or refinancing to pay out that equity.
