Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

I need to know about stepparent's rights in Minnesota. I am preparing to enter into a dialogue with my ex regarding his spouse's rights (or lackthereof) as a stepmother. I'd love a broad overview of what "legal stranger" means. Or perhaps from a different angle, if someone could enumerate what my legal rights are as a parent... Also, on a specific note, my ex has indicated that he has granted his spouse "custodial guardianship" of our children through a power of attorney. Can he legally do that?

There is nothing that defines the role of a step parent. However, most courts understand that a step parent also has an important role to play in children's lives. They are not a legal stranger. They may be empowered to act on behalf of the children in the event of an emergency and they are often listed as a secondary contact on school and medical records. Most courts would view that as an appropriate role in the absence of any specific concerns regarding child safety.
