suicide lawsuit
Dear Lawyer-
Can I sue the family of my 17 year old non-custodial son that committed suicide 1-17-2006 after they lied to get custody of him (when he was 3 years old) 13 years earlier and his custodial father continued to abuse drugs and alcohol the entire time...I've paid child support the entire time, was prevented from seeing him on many occaisions. Even for family week during his (my sons) time in drug and alcohol treatment! I now have 14 years sobriety. Kevin was my only son. I am a single woman 44 years old.
The kangaroo court that awarded custody to Kevin's father in 1992 was in Ramsey County MN, Kevin's father's motive for the custody was not what was the best for Kevin, but to recieve child support (cash) from me, which he did every month for 13 years of Kevin's short life. Kevin told me often ''that money is for the house payment''. My grief is so great. How can these people get away with this?

I am very sorry to hear about your son, and recognize this is an extremely difficult time.
It is unlikely there is any basis for a claim against your former husband or his family, for the death of your son. Depending on the circumstances of his death it is conceivable there could be a cause of action, but more facts would have to be considered -- did they refuse him medical treatment, abuse or neglect him, etc. Even then, however, it may be difficult to make a claim. Moreover, beyond the question of liability is the question of damages.
Sometimes, the law cannot provide any relief, and what help it can provide might be imperfect.
I am going to refer your question to another lawyer who is a friend of mine, who does not respond to questions in this forum, and see if he has any suggestions.
