Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

Termination of fathers parental rights

My boyfriend and I broke up when I was 4 monthes pregnant with our son. He knew that I was pregnant and he knew that he was the father.Since then he has made no effort in contacting myself or our child. He is not listed on the birth certificate. My son is now six monthes old and I am concerned about the father deciding at some future point that he wants a paternity test or parental rights and visitation. Can I legally refuse him this since he basically abandoned us and has made no contact? Is their anything that I can do now to terminate his rights?

Re: Termination of fathers parental rights

If you get married you can have your new husband adopt the child. Otherwise, it can take years of abandonment before a court will terminate the parental rights of a potential parent for that reason alone. Call me if you have any other questions.
