Violation of privacy

Was the father's right to privacy jeaopardized in this case? Father has physical custody. 12 year old runs away while in father's home. Police investigate and find child. Mother's brother-in-law who is a police officer in the same department reports the incident to the child's mother.

The mother has as much right to be contacted by police as the father when a child's safety or welfare is at statke. Regardless of whether the police contacted her, the moother has a right to information from the other parent about such safety issues.

Thank you for your question. The police did not violate the law when they contacted the child's mother about the incident you have described. Whether or not the child's mother has a relative in the police force is irrelevant. Each parent can be contacted by the police, regardless of who reported the incident.
