Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Minnesota
I had a bill collector harrassing me for quite some time. Everytime I spoke to them, they were very rude and I would tell them that I was going to hang up if they couldn't be respectful. I always hung up. Well, they started calling my parents, (not co-signed on the loan) and telling them that if I didn't pay this loan in full within so many days that they were going to have my Nursing License revoked. My parents got scared and paid the bill. Is this true? could they have done that legally? Wouldn't this be considered harrassment? What are my rights with this? The loan was for an online school and when I tried to cancel it, they wouldn't let me. They wouldn't let me return my books I continued to receive after I tried to cancel. I refused to pay them starting when I cancelled. They said that I then had 58 "bounced Checks" because I had signed up for auto withrawl from my checking and I stopped this authorization with my bank. What are my rights? Thanks!

It does appear that your rights have been violated by this company. There are laws against bill collectors contacting your family about your debt, and against bill collectors threatening actions they are not legally allowed to take. To get a better analysis of exactly whether and which rights have been violated, and what remedies you have, I would strongly recommend talking to an attorney. Most attorneys will give you a free consultation, and with actions against creditors, some attorneys will take action against the creditor for free and collect their attorney's fees from the creditor.
