Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Minnesota

Broken Agreement; moved out of state

I was entering my senior year of college and was selling my Jeep to pay for my last year of school. A family friend and someone whom I have had much respect for all my life offered to but my Jeep. There was some work that needed to be done on it and he was fully aware. We agreed that he would pay me $5k for the Jeep. He gave me $2500 the day of the sale and was going to mail me the $2500 the following week. I was leaving to study abroad in Asia that Sunday and would not be around to deposit the checkso I left instructions for him to mail the money to my mother and she would deposit it for me and I could then pay for school.

This did not happen. I ended up taking out additional student loans to pay for school. After returning home from Asia and meeting the family friend he said he would pay me back in full ''very soon.'' I had no reason to not believe him. It has almost been 2yrs and still no money. He has since moved out of the state. Can I take him to court to get my money back?

Re: Broken Agreement; moved out of state

You'll have to sue in his home state for small claims court.I suggest you find an attorney near his home and have them handle it for a %, perhaps trying a demand letter first.
