Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Minnesota

Lawsuit settlements

I am being sued by a former employer for a large sum of money in civil court. I do not have anything near this amount of money. If the former employer wins the lawsuit, what property of mine can they receive? I am mostly concerned about my house and property in my house.

Thank you!!!

Re: Lawsuit settlements

Your home and most of its contents are exempt under Minnsota law - that means the creditors can't take them even if they win the lawsuit.

A full explanation of the exemptions are on my website at http://www.bkylaw.com. Click on the icon for exemptions and look at the section on the state exemption law. You might also want to look at the section on house and car. The reason that bankrupt folks can keep their house and car is because of the exemption statute.

Assuming that either you have no defenses or, even if you do, you can't afford to defend this legal action, you might want to consider a bankruptcy. Chapter 7 bankruptcy would stop that lawsuit right now.

Good luck.
