Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Minnesota

I was Secretary for a local Historical Society and verbally and writen (Minutes) that I was working (Not asked to do) a book that I was volunteering my time for and the book will belong to the Society membership. I have since then been stongly asked to resign and after much stress have done so and am angry and don't want the Society to benifit from my book. My question is can I legally keep the book from them (2 years of my time gathering the information) or can I get some of the proffits and give them a little %. The society doesn't have the money to publish the book.

No. It was a work created in your role with the historical society. the property inures to them. You would have no right of ownership or to compensation absent a contract for the same.
